We will help you find the lightest weight most optically correct lenses for your prescription. Where some stores carry a handful of lenses to choose from over 50 different types of lenses, so you are sure to find exactly what you want.

Glass

The original lens material. Rigid. Scratch resistant.

Plastic

Approximately 50% lighter in weight than glass in same power prescriptions. Lenses may be coated to improve scratch resistance. Can be tinted to any color with uniform density and coated to filter ultraviolet light

Polycarbonate

The lightest material available. The most impact resistant, strongest and safest material. Coated to improve scratch resistance. Absorbs 99% of ultraviolet light. up to 25% thinner and 35% lighter than plastic. Recommended for children, when safety is the major concern.

Hi-Index 1.57, 1.60, 1.66 and higher Index specialty lenses:

Thinnest lens material available. Designed to minimize thickness and improve the cosmetic effect of the glasses. Scratch resistant coated. UV protection inherent in this lens material.

Sunglasses
We carry a fine assortment of designer and sport sunglasses. Some of our sunglasses have innovative features such as adjustable cables, thermo-grip® nose pads and temples to ensure snugger, no-slip fit. Polycarbonate sunglass lenses continue to be strong sellers due to their shatterproof properties. They are also more fog-resistant than glass or plastic lenses.

To provide optimal eye protection, your sunglasses should:

Block out 99-100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation

Screen out 75-90% of visible light

Be perfectly matched in color and be free of distortion, and

Be able to protect the eyes from impact injury

The principal danger posed by the sun is in the form of ultraviolet radiation (in short UV radiation). UV is a component of solar energy, but it can also be given off by artificial sources like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers.

Every frame in our stock can be made to prescription sunglasses with all protective lens and coating options including UV filters. Our professional opticians will assist you in choosing the best options for your sunglass frames.

Sunglass
Lenses
Solid Tints: Plastic lenses bathed in specialty lens tints can take on any color shade and density. The lens actually absorbs the tint color into the lens material, hence there is no risk of fading or wash out. Tint density is defined as a percentage, where 0% is completely clear, and 100% permits no light to pass through. A 10% to 20% tint is used for a "fashion" tint, and a 50% to 80% tint is used for outdoor protection from the sun. You may choose your own lens color, and customize your sunglass lenses to your specific needs and applications. Choose from blue, Green, Grey, Brown, Yellow and Amber colors.

Photo chromic Glass Lenses: Photo chromic lens is the type that automatically changes its color depending on the amount of light (ultraviolet rays) that are cast upon the lens. When more light is encountered, the lens becomes darker. Conversely, when less light is shined then the lens becomes lighter in color.

Photo chromic Plastic Lenses: The original plastic photo chromic was introduced in 1991 and has since become very popular. This lens isn't designed to take the place of sunglasses. They are designed for people who normally like a tint in their lenses and prefer the light weight of plastic lenses. The added advantage is that they do change to existing light conditions giving more of a tint enhancement. All plastic photo chromic lenses come with scratch resistance coating, 100% UVA and 99.8 % UVB protection. They are continually becoming available in more lens styles. Please ask us for a demo.

Polarized Lenses: Polarized lenses have the benefit of filtering out reflected light and glare off water, pavement and snow. This type of lens works great for fishing, boating, driving or any other glare intensive activity. Polarized lenses are the best way to eliminate both glare and UV light. Many polarized lenses feature Anti-Reflective coating on the back of the lens for even better clarity and reduced back glare.

Coatings

Scratch resistant coating: The plastic lens material is relatively soft and is easily scratched if it is not coated with scratch-resistant material. Even with scratch-resistant coating, your lenses will become scratched through normal use over time. The coating material is a much harder plastic compound that is applied to the lens, but it too can be scratched. Once scratched, a lens cannot be repaired or "buffed" free of the scratch. Scratch coating cannot be guaranteed; it is simply added protection from scratching, and it will inevitably scratch over time.

Ultraviolet protection (UV) Coating: The sun radiates ultraviolet waves, which are extremely damaging to the human eye and skin. Lenses with ultraviolet protection help prevent the harmful UV radiation from touching your eyes. Polycarbonate, high-index, photo chromic, and polarized lenses all automatically contain UV protection.

Anti Reflective (AR) Coating is an extremely thin layer of film that is deposited on either the front or the back surface of the sunglass lens that virtually eliminates reflections from the back of the lens. AR coating makes it easier for other people to see the wearer's eyes, and it makes it easier for the wearer to see through the lens. AR coating is very useful for night driving and for people who look at computer screens. Lenses with AR coating must never be cleaned dry, as this can scratch the coating. The best cleaner is one that is made especially for AR-coated lenses.

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a large part of most practices and we are no different. Our extensive experience means that we are able to fit and advise on all available contact lens options. We are not tied to just one contact lens manufacturer.

Have You Thought About Contacts?
There has never been a better time to wear contact lenses. New lens designs and materials are available and modern lenses are more comfortable and affordable than ever before. Often contact lenses cost less than a pair of glasses.

Freedom

Contact lenses give you the freedom to see all around without annoying rims of spectacle frames spoiling the view. Many people feel that they are more natural and comfortable wearing contact lenses.

'
No Risk' Trials
If you've thought about lenses but wondered if they are suitable, now is the time to find out. At your first appointment we will assess your suitability for lenses and explain your options. If there is a problem that may mean less than 100% success we will tell you about it and explain the consequences. It may be that you need a special lens. We will explain why and clearly tell you how much it will cost.
Your first experience of lens wear will be as soon as possible. We will demonstrate how amazingly comfortable they can be. Where possible we will let you take some home to try before you commit yourself to going ahead. The only cost will be the contact lens assessment and fitting fee.

Do not worry about making a decision on what type of lens to choose. We will ensure that your needs are acknowledged and that the best lens for those needs are used. Of course, there are lots of options that will be explained. You can opt for tinted lenses to change your appearance, Ultra Violet filter lenses for maximum protection, bifocals, multifocals, disposables, or regular lenses.

Soft lenses

These are the most popular because they are so comfortable to wear. They are easy to adapt to and gentle on your eyes. They do however; need to be replaced more frequently. Modern lenses allow extended wear and are available for people with astigmatism (A visual defect in which the unequal curvature of one or more refractive surfaces of the eye, usually the cornea, prevents light rays from focusing clearly at one point on the retina, resulting in blurred vision.) and bifocal wearers. There are even daily disposable bifocals and daily disposable lenses for people with astigmatism. We also have a great range of colored contact lenses for every day or the occasional special night out.

Silicon Hydrogel Lenses

The newest of the soft lens family and possibly the most advanced. These lenses feel like a soft lens, and behave like a soft lens but allow as much oxygen to get to the eye as some of the very best Gas Permeable rigid lenses. As well as being used for people who have had problems, they are great for extended wear up to a month. These lenses are set to re-write the rules on soft lens performance.

Gas Permeable Lenses

These are recommended if your eyes need extra oxygen, or if you have a lot of astigmatism. They do take a little longer to get used to, but they last a lot longer than soft lenses. Bifocals and multi-focal lenses are also available.

Taking Care of Contact Lenses

Unless you wear daily disposable lenses, you will need to clean and disinfect your contacts to ensure both the lenses and your eyes stay in good condition. The type of care system you use depends on the type of lenses you have and how they are worn. We will make sure you understand what to do before you take your lenses home.

Worried about getting the lenses in and out?

Our staff will spend as much time as you need to ensure you are confident and safe in handling your lenses. If you have worn lenses before and struggled - please give us a call. We will be glad to help.
